3D model box types - more please!

Issue #7372 new
RetroFrogg created an issue

When looking at the "3D Model Settings" in the Edit Platform window, there are only 2 model types - Box and DVD case. Could we have CD case and cassette case too please? And ideally Megadrive cases?

Or, best of all, allow us to make our own 3D models to import? There are a lot of different shapes and formats of media boxes/cases out there.

I would add to this being able to assign per-game boxes as well. Sometimes a game on a platform will come in a different type of box. Like how sometimes PS2 games come in the cardboard sleeves, or how PS1 games sometimes have the multi-disc cases or PAL thicker cases etc.

The ability to import a custom model would be ideal, especially for PC collections since tons of different shapes exist there (Tomb Raider comes to mind with its odd angular box).

Sam raises a good point about PC game boxes being particularly non standard. Rather than trying to tackle odd custom shapes though I’d personally be happy if the next revision to 3D models included a CD jewel case option and per game overrides. Having an old LP style EA game sleeve the same thickness as an ordinary box next to a MECC plastic clamshell that is being displayed as a carboard box makes for a weird experience. This is to say nothing of what it does to arcade flyers and digital storefront banners. While there are plenty of weird shapes in packaging (game.com comes to mind!), I think that adding CD jewel cases and per game overrides is far more important.

The boxes would be awesome with a editable X,Y and Z. AGAIN to the point of famicom, there are SO MANY DIFFERENT BOXES :)

Ah, yes I know that when new features are added, they appear in the beta thread. I keep a close eye on those threads. But this is a feature request thread, which I understand should be here and not on the forums. I was looking for any updates or pointers on the progress with this request (given that there are a number of votes for it).

I am simply advising you will find update there typically first. Since it is our most frequently viewed source on information. Ticket is usally updated after a release for a beta or stable is done.

I think we’re having 2 separate conversations. It’s fine though, just wanted to flag this up.

Can definitely sign up for the ability to make and upload their own 3D images for 3 big reasons.
    1) As you said, there are multiple different boxes for some systems. Good example is the shape of normal SNES games versus Mario Paint and the Super Scope 6 which included extra peripherals which made the boxes look drastically different. Or single disc PSX games versus multi-disc games.

    2) If you have people making and uploading full 3D boxes, then you have the ability of having the spines on all sides being different to address the fact that many games have different images for different sides of the cart and it actually ensures all your sides actually match. Sucks when your importer gives you a proper front box images but then the back of the box is in a different language entirely or the box has a different aspect ratio that is now stretched or squished to fit.

    3) It is also a huge bonus that if these 3D boxes were actually done, the importer could actually just download that single pre-made 3D image and then use that to generate the front/box box images or those 3D box images entirely so they are all matched perfectly. No more having what is supposed to be the same box turning up completely different images unless you want to personally inspect every file when you import stuff. You KNOW that if the front of the box is correct, your back and spines will be correct and your 3D image view will always match as well.

Another potential clue….doing some work in LB this eve. Specifically, revmoed Game Boy roms and playlists, then re-imported the roms. Currnently rotation is smooth.
