2. I am curious as to what happens if a node/mote does not use a rank_factor of 1. Does the Earth stop rotating?

I guess it smooths the differences between hops. The Step or rank corrected by the factor. If rank_factor is big then the small variations of the step or rank cause big increments. Otherwise it smooths the variation
