blender 3.4.1 crashes when rendering G9 with eevee (and workaround)

Issue #1338 resolved
Alessandro Padovani created an issue

daz studio 4.21.0.5, blender 3.4.1, diffeomorphic 1.7.0.1360, windows 10 Pro 21H2, nvidia studio driver 526.98

This seems a bug in blender, not with the plugin. I’m reporting it here because I found a workaround in case you get the crash. Blender 3.3.2 works fine, it’s only 3.4.1 getting the crash.

steps:

  1. import G9
  2. limit viewport to 2K textures
  3. render with eevee

The crash is related to the texture resizing in eevee, that I usually keep to 2K to reduce the vram usage for large scenes. If I disable this option then blender renders fine. I suppose this is related to the texture size in daz studio but so far I only found G9 which crashes blender.

Let me know if anyone can confirm the issue so we may report a bug to the blender team.

Now I know exactly what it is, will update and file a bug report to the blender guys.

update. Jeroen Bakker fixed this so eventually blender 3.4.2 will work fine when it comes out. Or get a daily build.

    update. important.

From information by Jeroen Bakker a 3.4.2 will not be released, he says to use 3.3 LTS instead. This means LTS is the official stable, while other versions may have and keep major bugs, even if released as stable. Makes little sense to me but this is how the blender team works.

p.s. The 3.4.1 daily build crashes as well so it’s not an option, the fix is included only in 3.5 beta.

This is finally fixed in blender 3.5.

As a personal note, it is incredible to me that they didn't fix blender 3.4, this means that only LTS is good for production because other versions are not granted to fix major bugs. That is, blender 3.4 wil remain forever a bugged version not to be used, the blender team will never fix it because it is not LTS.
