Applying Geoshells Affects The Eyes Of The Figure

Issue #1486 invalid
Shayn Sn created an issue

I’ve tried this with all types of shells like facepaints, tattoos, cloth shells but whenever I apply shells, all other parameters remain fine but the eyes seem to be affected.

I’ve tried using geometry nodes as an alternative but the rig seems to be not usable as a result. Am I doing something incorrectly?

I’ve tried turning off the shell for eyes, sclera, (any part not related to the shell) in Daz Studio but that doesn't seem to have an effect. Here’s a before and after from applying a shell on the figure. (Glossiness was manually altered a bit by me so no issues with that.)

The cloth type near the neck is the geoshell and all the required steps were taken in Daz to ensure it does not affect the face and eyes but still the eyes seem to whiten.

When the geoshell is removed the eyes go back to normal

Is she G8 or G9? In G9 the eyes are a separate mesh, perhaps that has something to do with it.

This issue seems to not happen in G8 it’s only a G8.1 problem from what I’ve found.

I would still request you to somehow fix this geoshell issue for g8.1 as some FACS expressions don’t go with G8 eyelashes. Also g8.1 has some nice skin textures which are not backwards compatible which is why I started using g8.1

I’ve attached a pic of geoshell applied on G8F as reference and the eyes look fine this time. Also used FACS to make her smile but her eyelashes don’t conform. It’s a different issue in itself but I prefer g8.1 anyway.

I would be really grateful if a fix for the geoshell issue in g8.1 is possible.

The issue can probably be fixed in Blender. Does any of the eye materials (iris, sclera, etc.) have a shell node group on the right side of the node tree, in the Shading workspace? If so you could eliminate it and connect its inputs and outputs.

The difference between G8 and G8.1 is that the former has a torso material but the latter has body and head. The plugin cannot compensate for that difference. But it shouldn’t affect the eyes.

From what I triend there seems to be no shell node on the right side of node tree for any eye component.
Apart from that I’m alas a casual blender user so my knowledge of nodes isn’t that great sadly…

For now I guess i’ll use shells sparingly on g8.1. Thanks for trying to diagnose it anyway!

shells work fine. I don’t have any issue here with G81 shells. The eyes work fine. When exporting shells to blender you must have all face groups = on and only use surfaces for visibilty. This is a limit due to the way the plugin imports shells as material layers. Also be sure to use uber as shell material since other shaders may not be fully supported, in this case you get a warning in blender when you import the scene. Below there’s an example with a full body shell on G81F, of course you have to exclude the visibility on the eyes if you don’t want the shell to affect the eyes.

If you still have issues after checking the shell then you can upload a test scene in duf format as simple as possible for us to evaluate.

facs work fine. I don’t have any issue with facs either, the eyelashes are correctly deformed, tried both G8F and Victoria 8. Be sure to check “transfer to face meshes“ in easy import. Below it’s the facs smile with Victoria 8.

Of course before reporting bugs be sure to update to the dev version and do a clean install. The stable and/or old versions don’t get the latest fixes and improvements. Please understand that, if you report bugs with a old version installed, this is only a waste of time both for you and us.

@Alessandro Padovani apologies for not backing up my claims. I tried your geoshell method but the surface of my character’s eyes still whiten out. Possibly because I use another figure’s eye material on the character. In my case it’s the eyes from a figure in Daz called Scarlet 8 HD.

Also the eyes and FACS issue seems to happen when I don’t check the FACS option in easy import and apply FACS through the morph importing options later on, maybe you can check that during your free time, it’s not an impending issue anyway, apart from the geoshell issue I face… Apologies, once again.
