HD Mesh Vascular Issues after import.

Issue #2077 duplicate
Balkazzaar created an issue

Hi,

I have a G8F model which is an HD Mesh (Victoria 8 HD) with vascular definitions applied and smoothing modifiers applied to it. I have followed the the steps mentioned in https://bitbucket.org/Diffeomorphic/import_daz/issues/1524/vascularity-not-showing-up-in-blender

The only difference is that, in addition to vascular definition, i have smoothing modifier applied on the mesh in DAZ. The reason i had to apply the smoothing modifier was because applying the vascular and muscular definitions on the model ended making certain parts of her body too sharp and pointy and some parts of the mesh showing signs of cutting or breaking as you can see in the image below. So with the right balance of smoothing modifier and vascular definition, i got the model i wanted.

But when the model is imported into Blender, 1 or more issues show up.

  1. Sometimes more than often, 99% of the time, i am seeing the HD vascular definition getting lost where the multires modifier just does not show up. I think its because i have smoothing modifier on the mesh in DAZ. But sometimes when i remove the smoothing modifier in DAZ, it still loses all the skin definition in blender.

This is the error i see in the console during the import process.

Invalid meshes found and corrected.
Importing morphs may not work:
  liznecklace-3
Could not rebuild subdivisions for the following HD objects:
  Genesis 8 Female_HD
  EP Ankle Boots_HD
  JungleJewels_09_GP_HD
HD objects with UV mismatch:

I think i may be missing something, which i dont think i am, but still would like to know. Sometimes the workaround i have found to solve this issue is to start fresh on a base G8f model with the vascular and muscular definitions, hair and no other assets and then import into blender. that i am seeing the muscular definitions. But then whats the point of importing a model with no or bare minimum assets on her? This model that i am using has hair, genitals, some earrings and shoes.

So for issue 1, can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong or missing?

  1. So when i use the workaround for issue 1 and just export the model without any assets on her or the smoothing modifier, i do see the skin definition being maintained in blender, because the multires modifier does get exported.

Then when i click subdivide, i get the mesh definitions back.

Now, i decided to apply softbody on the mesh.

But when i do that, all vascular definitions are lost again.

The main problem for me is issue 1. If i create a G8F model in DAZ with a handful of assets on her with muscular and vascular definitions along with a smoothing modifier on the model and then try to import it in blender, issue 1 and/or 2 occurs.

Unfortunately this is a known blender limitation, see #382. Multires can’t always unsubdivide a mesh depending on its complexity, this is the error you get.

That said if you only use morphs the mesh itself doesn’t change so I’m surprised you get this error on the G8F mesh. To export HD with geografts be sure to enter the geometry editor in daz studio, and to set the geograft to base resolution if it’s not HD that’s the common case.

    https://bitbucket.org/Diffeomorphic/import_daz/wiki/Export/High-resolution Export To Blender

If everything fails and you absolutely need the HD mesh, then you can use the HD mesh without multires with the Xin addon #1862. There you can also bake the HD details to a normal map to use with the base resolution mesh.

@padone My sincere thanks for your response.

Every time i try to use this addon, there is some issue or the other always. Especially when the model gets complex. If you look at my post history since the past few years, to be honest, every time i tried getting a model with multiple assets into blender, something or the other would break. I am very frustrated. I have still not imported a G8F complex model with multiple DAZ assets into Blender to this day. Its always some issue or the other. I guess i am srurrounded by bad luck or the assets i use have compatibility issues in blender.

In this model’s case, i absolutely do need the HD mesh and the assets on her since without that vascular definitions would not be shown.

If i need to use diffeomorphic with Xin addon, how do i do that step by step? Will following this link ==> https://diffeomorphic.blogspot.com/2023/04/daz-hd-morphs-and-xins-addon.html help?

Also should i setup up the model using diffeomorphic first then do Xin’s setup? or vice-versa?

The Xin distribution includes a manual with step by step tutorials, so no need to duplicate it here. For questions you can address Xin on #1862. Personally I only used the Xin addon some time ago to help Xin with bugs and troubleshooting, I’m not a big fan of HD.

As for complex things not working, I’m afraid this is expected. That is, blender doesn’t work the same as daz studio, so regardless of the incredible work by Thomas, there may be some things off. Bugs can be fixed, some blender limitations can be worked around, others can not that unfortunately seems your case here. That said once you have the asset in blender you can do anything you want and fit it to your needs using any blender tool, that’s the beauty of blender.

My suggestion is to keep things simple. Use easy import, avoid HD if possible, avoid complex morphs set that may be good in daz studio but not in blender. Some assets in the daz shop as complex morphs sets or custom shaders or extreme HD models are not going to work fine in blender. Avoid G9 if possible that’s much more heavy and complex compared to G8.

p.s. possible workaround ? I’m not sure if I understand correctly, but if you found that the issue is caused by the smooth modifier in daz studio, then you can import without smoothing then smooth in blender instead, that seems a easy workaround to me.

Again, this is a known blender limitation with multires and a duplicate of #382. This is not a bug in the importer and there’s nothing we can do about it.
