Is it OK to update to DAZ 4.23?

Issue #2231 open
CookItOff created an issue

Daz Studio seems to have split into a paid subscription version and a free version as of 4.23, with many features missing now from the free version. Has anyone tried the diff add-on with the free 4.23 Studio release? It popped up in my Install Manager and I’m weary to download it imeditally.

Sorry if this is mentioned on the blog, but I looked and didn’t see any mention of it.

Thanks.

I can’t find any description of the 4.23 new features in the daz forum, plus it is out as beta so I wouldn’t expect it to be stable for production, I mean even the general release isn’t stable for production go figure the beta ..

You’re right in my product library I see 4.23.0.1 as general release, odd that in the daz forum it isn’t. Personally I’m not willing to test the new release soon I’m rather waiting for the forum to see what early adopters have to report, as unfortunately it is a tradition for daz to release buggy products so I’d expect a fix release soon.

The new features in the trailer seem to only affect the daz side, if they didn’t change the api the exporter should work fine, as well as the blender importer. If you get 4.23 you tell us.

Agreed. I plan on waiting too, for the same reasons.

If it does break something I’m sure you guys will hear about it soon enough. :)

Did this get changed to Duplicate by mistake? I don’t see anything else and that 2232 link is broken.

It was duplicated to something that was later closed. Keeping one thread about 4.23 open might be a good thing. Personally I’m not really interested in the development of DS itself, it’s the assets that I’m after.

I installed 4.23 alongside my 4.22, and now all the DSF and DUF icons on my files are missing.

    Good job, Daz3D.

As for the DAZ support, It is not possible to install two versions of daz studio. But you can install the beta alongside the general release, for example 4.23 beta with 4.22 release, which will not share the addons and settings.

Just copy the install directory to a different folder.

It works fine for everything I need it for (loading models to compare to Blender).

So I installed 4.23 to give it a spin and everything seems to be working fine with the Diff. add-on. There are a couple of new things like a default Gen 9 anime character and shaders that tempted me to try it out. The Filament anime shaders can load into Blender but incorrectly and needs some tweaking to get set. This will probably need changes on the diff side to load correctly (?).

I haven't ran into anything else but I haven’t played too long with 4.23 either.

I’ll post here when I run into more 4.23 issues as it may not be normal 4.22 and diff issues.

    Windows 11

    Blender 3.6

    Blender 4.3

Filament shaders are actually not supported, but I suppose this could work as usual if you convert filament to iray before exporting, as we do with 3delight. Otherwise the filament shaders wouldn’t work in daz studio too if you render with iray. Let me know if this does.

The new G9 package was released yesterday so I didn’t install 4.23 yet. Waiting for things to settle first.

    update. Filatoon.

Nope, from what I get on the daz forum, filatoon only works on filament and renders black with iray, it also requires specialized geometry to work properly, so it only works on G9 with the toon geometry enabled. May be we can import some filatoon in blender using the Toon BSDF, but that wouldn’t work in eevee so I don’t like this option too much.

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/704951/

In general though, to get a really fast and easy toon shader in blender we can just enable the toon matcap style.

p.s. Personally I was never interested in toon shading or NPR, with a quick google search I see there’s lots of different ways to do that in blender. As for filatoon it uses a very specific way requiring custom geometry, which doesn’t seem the best way in blender.

p.p.s. It also seems filatoon has strong limtations in daz studio, for example it only works with geometry hair, not strand based or dforce.

Thanks Alessandro, I noticed it was rendering black in iray and does the same in Cycles, I was just thinking that y’all may eventually bring the shader over by converting it to something compatible with Blender. The Filament shader is a little different than just a simple toon shader in Blender as there are specific image textures.

No rush if a plan is being discussed as I don’t usually use Toon shaders, but having the conversion option would be nice down the road. :)

I have no experience at all with NPR, but eventually will look at it and let Thomas know if I find something which works fine enough. I don’t plan to get 4.23 right now though, will wait for things to settle down first. Then it may also be that DAZ will add the shader conversion to iray, same as 3delight, in this case we have to do nothing.
