auto import morph

Issue #255 wontfix
Mesus created an issue

Daz automatically imports the corresponding morph of the props you load into the scene, for example if i import a hair, the morphs of this specific hair gets loaded too. I wonder if we can do that in blender like auto importing morphs as shape keys ? any thoughts?

Actually daz studio doesn’t import the morphs themselves but just a reference to them, then the morph gets loaded if we use it. Even so, that’s anyway a long process especially when the user has tons of morphs in the daz content folder, eventually also related among them. Think for example of users who make characters by mixing other characters, that’s a morph hell. That’s also why most users with a large content folder get very slow loading times in daz studio. Then in blender every morph you load takes the whole object vertex set, so the more morphs the more heavy is the scene. If we’d automatically load all of the referenced morphs for the figure, including not used ones, I guess it’s a good way to nuke the scene down to its knees.

The idea behind diffeo is the reverse. We bake the main shape of the figure in the dbz then we only load the jcms and other morphs we may need to get the figure working. This is very fast and optimized for animation.

If you ask me, personally I also don’t load most jcms since a dressed figure usually doesn’t need most of them.

edit. Also blender can’t morph armatures as genesis does, so importing the figure morphs doesn’t make much sense anyway. This is a limit common to all the 3d packages I know of, since morphing bones is a feature unique to genesis and daz studio.

The philosophy behind this plugin is to import a Daz scene as faithfully as possible, and then provide the user with tools for customizing the result in Blender. Loading all standard morphs by pressing buttons don’t take that much time, and a lot of it is actually spent by the computer doing the work which would be the same anyway.
