Is there any reason to dismiss a notification without reading (or just opening) a thread? If there is one, I'd suggest replacing a message counter with an "X" button on hover.

It is working as intended.

An example of a simple reason to dismiss a notification could be this: you've already read that thread from another device. Also, this feature works exactly this way for years. Old time users get used to it.

Still, it might be considered as a bug for touchscreen-only devices cause there's no way to make rightclicks. That should be fixed someday.

Laptop users have no way of opening a thread in one click too.

So maybe open the forum when a counter is clicked? Mimicing friends' messages' counter behaviour.
