Speakers not working on 24" ACD until I load brightness controller

First of all fantastic work and thank you!

I know this doesn't have to do with you directly but since I'm getting nowhere with MS support (http://answers.microsoft.com/thread/22bcb632-81e2-4734-b2cf-d955d217c0ca) I thought I'd ask here.

I have an older 24" ACD with embedded speakers and it all worked great on Win7. On Win8 the driver is installed correctly and all but the speakers will only spit out sound on startup and whenever I have loaded the brightness controller. If I turn it off, poof goes the sound.

I haven't found any driver combination that makes this go away. I've got a mobo with the Azalea codec.

Any ideas what's going on here? Are you doing something special when your application is loaded that would make this magically work? How easily could we make a driver for it?
