Eevee to Sylveon Gender Change

I chose a male Eevee as my starter. Even though it was a male, I really wanted to evolve it into a Sylveon for irony reasons. I raised it to lvl 17 and it evolved! I finally had my male Sylveon! But when I glanced at the health bar, I noticed it was now a girl. It was slightly disappointing. Was this intentional?
