can't smash rocks in the fiery caverns

I am in the fiery caverns and have not cleared its events yet. When I walk up to a smashable rock and try to interact, nothing happens (no pop up box or anything). I have a fighting type pokemon in my party and rock smashing has always worked in the past. idk what's up but I just really need me some heart scales ok
