Died from poison...

So while I was in the middle of a Nuzlocke, I was at the first cultist battle in the town hall. It was a randomizer, so I had a Torkoal and the Cultist had a Houndoom. It used Smog and poisoned me. Earlier in the game, I had gotten the survived the poison message, so I assumed it would be this way. After being at 8 HP and poisoned, and heading to the Pokecenter, I blacked out instead of being cured in the middle of the first town. I have no clue why this happened, is it a feature?
