Difficulty Setting

I started a new play through when the new update first came out. I went through the settings like I do with every Pokemon game and I changed the difficulty to hard because I recalled the game being slightly easy during my first play through. I new it changed because it told me "Difficulty will lock after the next gym battle", and I when I started getting too high level my Pokemon started gaining only 1 exp. However, I got to Harmony and I realized that my Pokemon were way higher level than hers (by about 2~3 levels). I went into my difficulty setting and it was set to easy even though it should have been hard. It automatically changed my difficulty without my permission, and now I can't change it back because it says "The difficulty has been locked."
