rock smash and i can't read books (in game :P )!

I couldn't read any books in houses since sonata city (i am now in hekate town). I am not sure if it's a bug or if i'm not supposed to read the books.

another question: are the rocks in musk forest and fiery caverns supposed to be rock smashable? (they aren't in my game, but they look like they are :P )
