Focus Band not working

Fighting the second gym leader and sent out my level 36 haunter (holding a focus band) to fight her level 34 haunter. My haunter had not been sent into battle previously. Gym leaders haunter attacked with shadow ball, the attack sound played twice and my haunter fainted.
