But displaying any part of the mesh (even empty) solves it ... Seems a state issue.

Fixed by re-ordering rendering of stack and surfaces (see new_extensions branch)

It seems linked to setting the matrix for the texture in ImgData::drawSur, or at least that solves the problem under Linux.
