Enhancement: Retrieve Custom Field should insert or replace xml in .object file

Would be great if you could auto insert or update an existing .object file with the specific xml excerpt.

Assuming you're talking about metadata format without custom object XML decomposition, this should be possible today using Retrieve for Merge. I used to do it all the time, though now I pretty much work (almost) exclusively on source format projects where those are distinct files. Am I misunderstanding the request?
