Error when creating components without connection

If I don’t set up a connection and create (for example) an apex class, I get the following dialog with error:

Is there any chance you can change this so that we don’t require an org connection to create components?

Do you mind sending me the corresponding stack trace from Help>Show Log in Explorer? That definitely shouldn't NPE.
