Retrieve for merge not working correctly

When retrieving a component, if I choose “Retrieve for Merge”, a new folder will be created, instead of updating the existing component. For example, instead of updating an object in the force-app/main/default/objects/objectName folder, it will create a new force-app/main/default/objectsobjectName folder. This only happens when using “Retrieve for Merge”, the “Retrive” button works correclty.

Edit with additional info: I reviewed my project structure “sources root” and it looks correct, but i’m adding a screenshot of it. My JDK is jdk-19.jdk, also attaching a screenshot of that.
