Can't retrieve skeletal .object for customizations to custom object from installed managed package

Based on a discussion with Brian Galdino, it's currently not possible to retrieve a skeletal .object file for custom fields, web links, validation rules, pick list values, etc., for custom objects from installed managed packages that don't already have at least one customization. This should be possible.
