add a histogram chart gadget

Issue #100 resolved
Bill Sheboy created an issue

Greetings!

Please consider adding a histogram chart to your excellent add-on product. This feature could be used for cycle times or throughput/velocity, helping teams better see the frequency distribution of these measures. Adding this chart (as well as control chart improvements) would make Great Gadgets much more useful than other add-ons which cost much more in the marketplace. I have included a sample image of a Cycle Time Histogram chart.

Features of such a chart could be:

  • Select the measure type: throughput, velocity, or cycle time (or make separate histograms for each)
  • Select the time range
  • Select optional display of average and/or percentile lines. For a histogram chart, these would be vertical lines indicators.
  • Select optional removal of outlier values
  • Bonus feature: Allow selection of the method used to determine outliers
  • Bonus feature: Select the method used to determine bin sizes, such as: Doane's formula, From width, Rice Rule, Square root, Sturges formula, etc.
  • Bonus feature: optional display of the statistical measures for the data
  • Bonus feature: option to display the histogram as a Pareto Chart

Please let me know if you have any questions about this suggestion.

Thanks and best regards,

Bill

    Hi Bill,

Thanks for posting. This sounds like a really nice feature.

We intend to implement it soon. I will keep you updated.

Would it be OK to contact you over email in case we have additional questions?

    Greetings!

After using your new histogram chart for a bit, I find it to be awesome! Great work!

Have you considered changing the layout so the x-axis label (e.g. Cycle Time) is shown below the x-axis value labels (e.g. number or date values) rather than inside the chart area? It appears this layout is consistent across several of the charts in the Great Gadgets add-on.

    Best regards,

    Bill

Just an FYI that in your documentation for this new gadget, you have this sentence:

Choose how to define the segmented columns (beans)

The word “beans” probably was meant to be “bins”, referring to the bin buckets for the counts on the chart.

Thanks again for your great product!

    Thanks for the feedback!

    We changed "beans" into "bins".
We also considered moving the x axis name under the x axis values but there are some issues with this. Sometimes it results in text overlapping and it takes much more space. For now we decided to leave it as is, but we might reconsider this at some point.

The new gadget is now available for both Cloud and Server/Data Center - app version 1.25.0.
