Empty popup sometimes appears after equipping items

In the example screenshot attached, I had just equipped a Mithril Chain Mail with nothing extraordinary about it. Upon equipping the armor, the Tome of Knowledge closed and I was presented with an option to resume the game, but nothing else was displayed.

This has happened on many occasions, with no discernible pattern as to which items will trigger this empty popup when they are equipped.
