Column/row click & shift-click lead to unexpected shaded/brightened pattern

If you click a column, then shift-click another column, you end up with the attached screen-cap. Two columns are selected (& disjoint) and everything between them is bright even though they're not selected. Since I'm aware that the shading feature doesn't do disjoint highlighting, perhaps shift-click should select all intervening spots?
