Hang on file open

I had opened a few files and encountered a hang when I subsequently tried to open one of John Matese's files:

    Duplicate of #283.

    I marked this issue as a duplicate of the later issue because the later issue was more descriptive. I believe this was the same issue encountered because it was after opening multiple files including John Matese's.
