It has been years since I have had to battle this uglyness, and since then I have forgot how to get rid of it.
The issue is, if you open a .xcf file ,from Thunar, with GIMP, it will open Gimp as it should. Now if you move to another .xcf file and open it, it will open with another instance of GIMP, while the previous GIMP is already loaded. So, the more files you open this way, the more GIMP applications that will open.
I've noticed the same thing going on with .mp4 files and "pick your player"
VLocity .48 and now .49 ISO installations have this issue. I have only caught it back in .48 and I think ther was maybe an iso or two that I skipped.
