ART 1.23 Win11 Pro crash

Issue #330 open

Hi all.
I’m lurking on Pixels.us ART forum and - after a bad experience with darktable - I’m trying to adopt ART as my raw/jpg images processing software. I’m studying the video lessons in French, but as I know (not too much, indeed!) only English, I need to have a translation so I’m going slowly in the process of understanding ART also because I have no experience with RawTherapee.
Anyway, I installed the latest ART version, ie 1.23 for Windows and until today I did not try to save/export the result of processing images.
Unfortunately the first time i tried to save/export a .jpg image (starting from another .jpg, not raw! image) ART crashed.
I cannot say what was exacty happened, but:
a) at first I modified an image (few things: exposure, rotation and crop)
b) I put that image into the queue to export it but when I activated the export the program told me that it was unable to save the modified file.
c) So I discovered that “Windows security” against ransomware set a “protected access” to directories for ART and prevented it from saving modified images.
d) As soon as I understood this and while ART was still running while the queue job was paused, I modified this option in Windows to allow ART to save images.
e) So I went back to ART and I “cancel” job queue (which contained one image). At this point ART disappeared abruptly.
f) I tried to restart it but wasn’t able. In fact using Task Manager I saw that the ART process was still active. So I killed it manually.
g) Even in these conditions I was not able to restart ART. So I decided to reboot the PC in order to be able to open ART again.

Herein enclosed you find the crash dump file that was created. No idea if it could be useful to understand what happened.

In any case thanks to Alberto for his program: I think it will be my favourite one for processing images. I think I’ll oin to the forum as soon as possible!

Hi, thanks for the report. Do I understand correctly that after rebooting and disabling the anti-malware you get no crash anymore?

    Thanks!

In Italian we say “Ni”. I mean I’m not so sure things were related. When these things happens - as they are unexpected - most of the time you cannot be sure you can report exactly the sequence of what happened. Besides even if you are sure of what you report, it is not true that “post hoc, propter hoc” ie: as something happens after something, then there is a dependance between these two things.
What I can say is: I had a problem for saving an image that was in queue to be saved; I removed the reason for which this happened. When I chosed to abort the saving (cancelation of the object from the queue), the screen became black, ART process was however present in Task Manager and even if I killed it, I wasn’t able to restart ART. had to reboot the PC (I did not try to see if other applications could be opened and/or were working.
The only doubt I have is that, when I tried to restart ART I waited for it for the time I normally know ART needs to restart, but I’m not sure that in this case I had to wait longer.
I add: I did these things without having a selected profile. If I remember correctly the program applied a “custom” profile but I did not created any profile.

I tried to repeat what I have done in another PC with Windows 11 at the same patch level using ART 1.23 also in this case.
Besides, in this 2nd PC I copied exactly the same content of:
    \%USERNAME%\%APPDATA%\ART
I had in the first one.
In this case the “Windows security” against ransomware was not set to “protected access” to directories for ART and the image processed was the same I used before. In this case I had no problem in starting my queue and getting the output.

Maybe another point I didn’t mention before that could be important: in both experiments I set as output directory a dir I created by myself and which was a subdir of the dir where I saved images to be processed.
BUT, while in the first case before doing this, I tried to create a queue chosing the default method which is:
    “Use template” %p1/converted/%f
in the 2nd experiment I chosed directly the:
    ”Save to folder” method.
In the first experiment in fact the prg told me that that dir was not found, probably because ART was not allowed to create dirs due to Windows security settings.

    Regards,

Thanks for your investigations! I'll keep this open until someone manages to reproduce it.
