Why fork?

ART is really good. Mainly for the mask feature. But why forking? Why not push changes to the main build of the RawTherapee. Was there some problem with RT developers to accept changes?

I do not see it as big problem but open source should be about contribution, cooperation not fragmentation. This is not questioning decision. I am just curious why.

I can see many forking in OS community mainly because original developers stop contributing to the code or there is many significant changes in forked app core. Some are just forks for no reason and they will lost edge with main repo very fast. Do you plan follow main repo of RT and put changes manually? What are future plans?

I would like to ask it in forum or email, but i could not find any.
