I have tested the copies of Wizardry available from both Abandonia.com and Abandonware-France.org.
Character creation in either copy works fine, but you can only proceed once you have allocated all bonus points to ability scores. After that, pressing ESC allow you to continue and choose a character class. If you still have points remaining, then pressing ESC will do nothing.
I am having the same problem. All bonus points are allocated, but hitting escape does nothing. I'm working on a laptop - not sure if that is the source of the problem.
A very belated update after another user ran into this, in the hopes that anyone googling this problem will realise what's going on:
In order to continue with character creation, you must assign all bonus points to stats and your character's stats must make them eligible for at least one character class. Available character classes will appear in the right-hand pane as you assign bonus points: once at least one character class is available, pressing ESC will then allow you to continue and choose which character class you want.
(For instance, raising strength to at least 11 will make FIGHTER appear as an option in the right-hand pane; raising IQ to at least 11 will make MAGE appear there, and so on.)
This is just poor UI signposting in an extremely old game, it's not a keyboard bug in Boxer. Proper documentation will be essential for getting anywhere with the game.
