How can I set the marginpar to be wider? currently text in marginpars wrap not even using half the width of the margin, and using showframe I can see it really is only allocated about half the margin width.

Check section 8 of classicthesis-config.tex, you can play with areaset and marginparwidth.

Agreed this isn't really a bug report, but none of the categories I could choose from seemed to fit, so I just went with the default.

I'll fiddle with section 8, thanks for the hint.
