Overview

Subscript

Kesako ?

Subscript is a Python-like language that compiles to javascript. It's not Python but it's the same syntax. PyPy try to be a better Python runtime, Subscript try to be a better language for the browser.

Why

Subscript is the answer from its creators wondering why javascript isn't Python. Python is nice, Python is powerful, Python is community powered, Python is mature, Python is widespread, Python can be compiled by Python and more. Javascript is Javascript.

How

Subscript is a set of Javascript library and a compiler written in Python that makes it possible to compile Python code to Javascript. It tries to be a better runtime than py2js by implementing more Python behaviour into javascript.

What

Tested with Python 2.7, firefox 5 & webkit

The Zen of Subscript

  • Beautiful is better than ugly.
  • Explicit is better than implicit.
  • Simple is better than complex.
  • Complex is better than complicated.
  • Flat is better than nested.
  • Sparse is better than dense.
  • Readability counts.
  • Special cases aren't special enough to break the rules.
  • Although practicality beats purity.
  • Errors should never pass silently.
  • Unless explicitly silenced.
  • In the face of ambiguity, refuse the temptation to guess.
  • There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it.
  • Although that way may not be obvious at first unless you're Dutch.
  • Now is better than never.
  • Although never is often better than right now.
  • If the implementation is hard to explain, it's a bad idea.
  • If the implementation is easy to explain, it may be a good idea.
  • Namespaces are one honking great idea -- let's do more of those!
