Description

We are pleased to announce the full release of the AlWriteIds ID matte system with detailed technical documentation. Rising Sun Pictures (RSP) has approved the full release and just given me time to write the technical documentation. There was a partial release of AlWriteIds last year. We have been sitting on the full release hoping that HtoA would get custom driver support* to provide a proper and robust HtoA solution. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like this feature is coming anytime soon. So, we decided to just move forward with the full release, as the MtoA implementation works just fine (MtoA supports custom drivers). Here are two short demo videos of the AlWriteIds ID matte system:

We have pushed the source code (for our shader, driver, and Nuke node plugin), technical documentation, and test scene up to my AlShaders fork for review:

AlWriteIds was originally inspired by Psyop's Cryptomatte (by Jonah Friedman and Andy Jones). However, we made a number of different design choices during AlWriteIds development that better suited our future needs (see the technical documentation). This in no way takes away from the wonderful Cryptomatte system. In fact, the plan at RSP is to make both available to the artist to use depending on the needs of their shot.
