Companion looting command not working

I tried to give a brand new weapon to my companion my dropping it on the ground but he won't pick it up. Tried giving him command to loot anything bodies and stuff on the ground from the pda, the companion command wheel, the numpad binds for companions. Nothing seems to work, they just don't loot anything.
