Incorrect mission completed

I was escorting ecologists to study an anomaly. Upon returning I talked to them in order to receive my payment and get the quest finished. Instead of finishing the escort mission, it finished a fetch quest for an artifact that I did not have. So now i’m stuck with them and cannot finish the quest? Edit: seems to persist when reloading the previous save and taking another escort quest.
