    Just pushed up a commit that fixes this (to create self._fmt with Formatter instead of TerminalFormatter) and makes whether to try to use Terminal256Formatter configurable.

    I disabled the new formatter in my own config because I don't like it :). Otherwise, the PR looks good

    I didn't like it either. Maybe I should default it to False and people can turn it on if they want it.

    I set use_terminal256formatter = False by default in pdb.py.
