Reduce regex use in transformer

Early testing suggests that the ADF/Wiki transformer performs much worse than would have been expected. The root cause seems to be that the Java regular expression engine is not particularly efficient and that it is probably worth the effort to replace them with manual matching logic wherever we can.

Additional improvements included in 0.20.0, and there don't appear to be any other obvious hot spots at this time.
