The Atlassian Java Platform is currently stuck on JDK 1.7 due to push-back from Crowd. There is no point moving the minimum version requirement for Caesium forward to 1.8 until after there is buy-in from more products, as that would just pose an additional barrier to its adoption.
I'll revisit this when the platform team does.
