Newbie Support: Fork, clone, mvn clean install fails

The just-want-it-to-build smoke test fails.

There are likely numerous flaws with my local maven3 setup and hundreds of pilot errors for why this just doesn't work.

It would be very helpful to have a How To Build section in the README.

Can you please provide your log and version of maven and java etc.?

Simply cloning and building with mvn 3.0.5 and 3.2.3 works for me.

The pom's have seen some clean up with the 3.0 release. This issue should be fixed.
