Usernames with . don't work for editing

We back our Stash instance with JIRA which is backed by Active Directory. The majority of our user names are first.last. These users are unable to edit files using this plugin. We have a handful of other users without the . in their username, they are able to edit the files. When a user with a . in their name tries to edit a file, an javascript error is seen.

Uncaught Error: Firebase.child failed: First argument must be a non-empty string and can't contain ".", "#", "$", "[", or "]".
