<p> not inserting extra break

Atlassian Confluence 4.2.5

In Markdown, my expectation is that LineBreaks insert <p> tags. Currently, they seem to be acting as <br> tags only. I have attempted to insert extra spaces in the Markdown module but these are stripped out on save. Please see the attached screen shots.
