alsa: try both mono and stereo configurations when negotiating params with audio device

In order to configure an ALSA device, you need to negotiate parameters. One of them is channels. Up until now, we have only ever dealt with devices that want stereo inputs and outputs. Some of the USB soundcards we use now want mono configuration so we should allow for that and if stereo config fails, try mono config.
