<kernelmethod> It appears that cave spiders will never actually use their "spider webs" mutation (or rather, I suspect their LeftCellEvent handler isn't working correctly; I'd need to understand AI behavior better to know why). From watching them over hundreds of turns, I haven't seen one actually spin a web.
