Madpole companion left behind even with wings

I have a madople companion who I equipped with mechanical wings. When the madpole is flying, she follows me from zone to zone as I would expect, and also joins me on overworld travel. When she is swimming, she gets left behind when transitioning to a new zone or when overworld traveling. If a zone has liquid pools when entering, she will often start the zone in one of the pools even if she was flying when we arrived, so this is often when she is left. I expect her to follow me if she has flight capability.

I noticed that if they did appear to be left behind (not appearing in companion menu) they would also seem to spontaneously spawn when a water source was available.
