It's maybe from the enemy moving through a bloody water tile? It stays looking that way until I lose line of sight, but when I find them again, it's fixed / normal. It's doing this with the glowfish and the madpoles. The glowfish pictured was first seen this way, but when the madpole changed into fuzz, I was already looking at the correct sprite.
