After exiting Tomb of Eaters, my character gets cloned ad infinitum

Whenever I enter the world screen, a new instance of my character is spawned at random vertical position in the left-most horizontal column on the map. Tiles occupied by my previous incarnations cannot be entered. In "zoomed-in" location screens, some cloning also occurs, but I wasn't able to figure out what exactly triggers it.

Tomb of the Eaters was a blast though, wish I could see where the quest goes. Thanks for all your hard work!
