Meal induced mutation leads to loss of gear slot

I ate a 2 ingredient meal with convalessence and fermented yonder cane which gave a rank 1 ice breath mutation. Oddly, when I went to use it I had two appearances of the same ability in the (a)bility menu. 24 hours later, the meal wore off, I no longer had access to the mutation, but I discovered my face had turned into icy vapours and could not be removed. I do not appear to be benefiting from the vapours as they are on my face instead of hands.

Apologies if this is working as intended, it just seemed so weird that I ought to post here in case it is a bug.
