reported after testing and confirming the situation stated by Pitifriend:

“I had the buff and I was fighting against a crypt sitter, killed it and then after a couple of turns when I was skipping turns so that I could heal myself I was killed by crypt sitter. I was fighting against only one of those but there was another one a dozen tiles away, so the other possible reason why I died could be if that crypt sitters laser went through walls while it was trying to shoot a ferret or something, if that's a thing.”

I got the metabolized effect by cooking vinewafer with boar jerky, took damage by walking on fracti and waited beside it until the effect expire, which killed me.
