The beamsplitter version always has a much wider overall shot spread (the non-beamsplitter version always hits this target or goes 1 tile beside it)

After playing some more, I think that the projectiles are firing in the right locations here overall, but rather this is a visual oddity with the order in which they are rendered.
Rather than rendering each “main” shot one at a time, along with that shot’s 2 split beams, the game instead draws all of the “right-side” split projectiles, then all of the “main” projectiles that go toward the target, and finally it draws all of the “left-side-split” projectiles together in a bunch. This results in an odd visual rendering that doesn’t feel quite like the beams are being split.
