More specifically, a bug as a result of an interaction with “Save and Quit” and checkpoints. As I describe over in #5143:

Reproduce steps:

1:start new role-play/wander game in joppa, but don’t move so the checkpoint doesn’t occur

2:press”<“ to go to world map

3:press “>” to back to “Current Location”

4:select “save and quit”

The above results in a bricked save that can’t be loaded. From my limited testing this can potentially occur in any place that tries to checkpoint, at any time (rip 8 hour save).

Normal saving as a result of walking around the world followed by a checkpoint save works fine to load.

No error message, no mods enabled, no message indicating a corrupt save file, however I’m not sure if said save is actually corrupted.

Logs don’t seem to indicate anything either.
