Latest update broke game on linux

I ran Caves of Qud just fine last night on my ubuntu 20.04 machine, but this morning, steam downloaded updates that included game content, likely the 2.0.201.115 update. The game will not run now. It just hangs on a black screen until it becomes a hung system process and prompts me to close.

I had version 2.0.201.58 and it ran perfectly. I made no system changes from power off to steam game update, trust me, I'm a doctor.
