miscellaneous info: the last thing i had done was press my dismember keybind followed immediately by the direction a snapjaw feeder was in. during the freeze i also pressed the direction again and then escape and inventory a few times, ultimately to no response. the play session was multiple hours long by this point and i was wandering around deep underground (stratum 20 or so). the game was not obviously hogging memory; the rest of the system responded fine

this is a wild guess but maybe it has to do with there being a steam achievement for killing snapjaws?
